The online chess behemoth Chess.com has revealed a data breach that affected the private information of 4,541 individuals, based on a report filed with the Maine Attorney General’s Office.

This cyber incident occurred on June 5, 2025, and was detected approximately two weeks later, on June 19, 2025. Chess.com verified that the breach stemmed from an external intrusion, wherein attackers acquired unauthorized access to confidential data.

The company stated that the hackers managed to secure names and personal identifiers, yet did not offer a complete inventory of all the data components exposed. The breach impacted users in various regions, including one individual from Maine.

Chess.com commenced notifying those affected on September 3, 2025, via written communications. In an effort to safeguard its community, the organization is providing 12 months of free identity theft protection services.

The notification was officially submitted by Elias Colabelli, the Head of the Legal Department and Data Protection Officer at Chess.com, who reiterated that the firm is bolstering its systems to avert similar occurrences in the future.

While the count of impacted users might appear minimal in comparison to other extensive data breaches, this event highlights how even prominent online platforms can become targets for cybercriminals. With over 150 million users globally, Chess.com retains a significant amount of personal information, rendering it an attractive target for hackers.

Cybersecurity professionals caution that breaches of this kind can lead to identity theft, phishing schemes, and additional fraud if stolen data circulates within underground markets.

Chess.com has yet to disclose whether law enforcement is participating in the inquiry. The company mentions it continues to enhance security measures and vigilantly monitors its systems.

We have contacted Chess.com for further information concerning the breach and are currently awaiting their reply. This article will be refreshed as soon as additional details emerge.

For users, the breach serves as a reminder to remain alert, scrutinize financial accounts, and be wary of dubious emails that could take advantage of compromised personal information.
