Apple is allegedly working on a software remedy for a troublesome iOS 26 glitch that has kept several users completely barred from their iPhones for extended periods.
As per a recent article by The Register, engineers at Cupertino are urgently trying to correct a keyboard interface error that unintentionally eliminated a particular special character essential for unlocking devices set with customized alphanumeric passcodes.
The problem came to light when Connor Byrne, a 21-year-old college student, recounted his situation on Reddit.
According to The Register, Byrne chose not to employ the typical four- or six-digit PIN on his iPhone 13. Instead, he bolstered his device’s security by implementing a complex, custom alphanumeric code as his main passcode.
Although cybersecurity experts strongly advocate for intricate passcodes to prevent brute-force intrusions, Byrne’s unique password combination triggered an unforeseen software trap.
He used the caron or háček (ˇ) symbol from the Czech keyboard layout on his iPhone. When Apple launched iOS 26 to the public in September 2025, the company inadvertently removed this specific character from the lock screen keyboard.
Lacking the capability to input the necessary symbol, Byrne found himself permanently barred from his smartphone. The only built-in solution offered by the device was a complete factory reset.
However, a reset would irreversibly eliminate months of precious photos and personal documents stored locally on the device. Opting to safeguard his data, the user has remained locked out while anticipating a possible software update.
Following the viral post on social media, Apple’s internal engineering team reportedly initiated an investigation into the issue. The Register mentions that Apple is currently working on a focused fix to reinstate the missing character, which is anticipated to be included in a forthcoming major iOS 26 release.
Interestingly, although Apple’s engineers responded within 9 days after the issue emerged online, the prolonged lockout has irreparably eroded the user’s trust.
As reported by The Register, Byrne has opted to switch to an Android device, specifically considering the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra.
He noted both the oversight in software quality assurance, mentioning that the current keyboard exhibits flaws by repeating characters side-by-side, and a preference for alternative camera capabilities. Apple has yet to provide an official public statement regarding the timeline for the fix.
