In a significant interruption to remote work and collaboration, Microsoft Teams faced a considerable breakdown on Friday, impacting numerous users across various regions. Reports of message delays, unsuccessful message transmissions, and difficulties with other service functionalities started increasing around 2:30 PM ET (7:30 PM GMT), halting productivity for organizations and individuals dependent on the platform.

Microsoft’s official status account recognized the issue shortly after, stating: “We’re investigating a problem where users may be experiencing delays in Microsoft Teams messaging and complications with other service functions.”

“We’re witnessing recovery in our telemetry and are continuing our evaluation to pinpoint the affected scenarios and determine the cause of this issue.” The firm instructed admins to refer to the Microsoft 365 admin center under incident ID TM1200517 for extra updates.

Outage monitoring websites like DownDetector noted a sharp increase in user reports, with complaints soaring into the thousands shortly after the incident began.

Users from the United States, Europe, Australia, and Asia reported dissatisfaction with delayed messages, inability to send files, and general slow response times in the app. One user on X (previously Twitter) remarked, “Definitely have multiple users in different regions experiencing noticeable latency in Teams,” emphasizing the widespread nature of the issue.

The outage extended beyond Teams in some instances, with reports of effects on Microsoft 365 services like Outlook and OneDrive, especially in Asia where work was “brought to a standstill.” This follows a trend of recent disruptions concerning Microsoft cloud services, including a similar occurrence just days prior affecting Japan and China.

Companies and remote workers took to social media to express their frustrations. “Microsoft Teams just took a coffee break. Teams, 365, Azure and more affected by outage for thousands globally,” commented one cybersecurity analyst.

Another user directly questioned Microsoft: “Is Microsoft Teams experiencing issues?” which prompted an official reply confirming the inquiry.

As per the latest updates, Microsoft noted signs of improvement but continued monitoring the situation. No estimated time for complete resolution has been issued, and the root cause remains under investigation. Users are encouraged to monitor the Microsoft 365 status page or DownDetector for real-time updates.
