NIST Gap Assessments

NIST CSF 2.0 and SP 800-171 gap assessments

We measure your security program against the NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0, NIST SP 800-171 or NIST SP 800-53 and show you exactly what to fix. You get a clear report and practical remediation support.

At a glance

NIST publishes widely used security frameworks. The Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 is voluntary guidance for any organization, while SP 800-171 sets requirements for protecting Controlled Unclassified Information, including for defense contractors. CyberAccord assesses your program against the framework that applies, reports the gaps, supports your self-assessment and helps remediate.

Which NIST framework applies to you?

The NIST Cybersecurity Framework is voluntary and suits organizations of any size or sector that want a structured way to manage cyber risk and report on it to leadership. Many companies adopt it as the backbone of their security program.

NIST SP 800-171 is different: it is a set of security requirements for protecting Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) in nonfederal systems, and contracts can make it mandatory. NIST SP 800-53 is the larger control catalog used for federal information systems and by organizations that build or operate systems for federal agencies.

What changed in NIST CSF 2.0?

NIST released CSF 2.0 in February 2024. It broadened the framework's audience beyond critical infrastructure and added a sixth function, Govern, alongside Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond and Recover.

Govern covers cybersecurity strategy, roles and responsibilities, policy, oversight and supply chain risk management. If your program was built on CSF 1.1, governance and supplier risk are the areas most likely to need work.

NIST SP 800-171 and defense contractors

Defense contractors and subcontractors that handle CUI are generally required by their contracts to implement SP 800-171 and to report a self-assessment score to the Department of Defense. The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) program, which is being phased into DoD contracts, builds on these requirements.

Our role is readiness: assessing your implementation, helping with your SP 800-171 self-assessment and documentation, and closing gaps. Third-party CMMC certification assessments are performed by authorized assessment organizations, which CyberAccord is not.

What we do

We compare your policies, procedures and technical controls with the framework you need, then give you a report that scores each area, explains the risk of each gap and ranks fixes by urgency. After the assessment we can help you remediate and keep your documentation current.

  • Current-state and target-state profiles for NIST CSF 2.0
  • Requirement-by-requirement review for SP 800-171
  • Control assessment against SP 800-53 baselines
  • System Security Plan and Plan of Action and Milestones support

How it works

  1. 1

    Choose the framework and scope

We confirm which NIST framework applies, based on your contracts, customers and goals, and define the systems in scope.

  2. 2

    Assess

We review documentation, interview your team and examine technical controls against each requirement.

  3. 3

    Report

You get a scored gap report with findings, risk context and a prioritized remediation roadmap.

  4. 4

    Remediate

We help you close gaps, update your System Security Plan and keep your self-assessment current.

Questions, answered

Is NIST compliance mandatory?

The Cybersecurity Framework is voluntary. SP 800-171 and SP 800-53 become mandatory when a contract, regulation or federal agency requires them, which is common for defense contractors and federal suppliers. We help you work out which applies to you.

Can CyberAccord certify us for CMMC?

No. CMMC certification assessments are performed by authorized third-party assessment organizations. We help you prepare by assessing and improving your SP 800-171 implementation and documentation.

What is the difference between NIST CSF and SP 800-171?

CSF is a high-level, outcome-based framework for managing cyber risk in any organization. SP 800-171 is a specific set of security requirements for protecting Controlled Unclassified Information. They complement each other, and many organizations use both.

Can you help with our SP 800-171 self-assessment score?

Yes. We review each requirement with you, document how it is met or what is missing, and help you build the System Security Plan and Plan of Action and Milestones that support the score you report.

We already have SOC 2 or ISO 27001. Is a NIST assessment still useful?

Often, yes. There is significant overlap, so the assessment goes faster, but each framework has requirements the others do not. We map your existing controls first so you only work on the real differences.
